'Beneath Your Feet / Encountering Buried Contaminants'

Trainer: Sheldon Thomas, qualified training provider meeting requirements of Guidelines 4.2 and 4.3 of O. Reg. 128/04
The course will focus on:
- The constant vigilance necessary to recognize possible hazardous contaminants that may be encountered during excavations
- The wide variety of mobile contaminants that can exist in soil and in the trench material that supports water and sewer infrastructure
- Legislation requiring workers to give notice as soon as an adverse condition or adverse effect is detected
- Various excerpts from water-related legislation that define ‘adverse conditions’, and ‘adverse effects’
- The M.O.E ‘s notification protocol that must be followed should a worker encounter a suspected hazardous material
- Contaminated Soil Response Protocol / how to react if a suspected hazardous contaminant is uncovered / how to remain safe
- Clarification of the role of the MOE
- Several supportive videos
- Select references to the Environmental Protection Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act / O. Reg. 170, the Ontario Water Resources Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act
Pre-requisites: Trainees should be engaged in water distribution system operation, design or construction
Target group: Water distribution management and field staff, contractors, consultants, water utility construction inspectors, members of water department safety section
Instructional methods: Power point presentation / discussion / training handout
Written multiple-choice test upon conclusion of training, pass 70%
