Fire Hydrants / Ready and Able

Director Approved Training Curriculum

Trainer:  Sheldon Thomas, qualified training provider meeting requirements of Guidelines 4.2 and 4.3 of O. Reg. 128/04

Course duration: full day

The course will focus on:
  • Trainees will be taught a comprehensive inspection and maintenance procedure for maintaining hydrant performance and readiness for use.
  • A detailed hydrant flow testing procedure will be provided, and discussed at length.
  • Water hammer and water column reaction to hydrant use is another topic covered.
  • By referring to the Ontario Fire Code, trainees will learn of their utility’s legal obligation to inspect hydrants properly and frequently. The consequences of not carrying out an adequate hydrant support program are also reviewed.
  • This course utilizes many brief video excerpts to support the training material.

There is a hands-on element to this seminar:
  • Trainees will spend approximately 1.5 hours out of doors at a hydrant of the clients choosing.
  • There, they will practice operating hydrant mechanisms, and will conduct flow tests and field calculations.
  • All trainees will be required to participate in this element.

It is requested that each attendee bring an inexpensive scientific calculator to this class.

Pre-requisites: Trainees should be engaged in water distribution system operation.

Target group: Water distribution field operators and supervisors; by arrangement with the host water system, any Fire Department personnel

Written multiple-choice test upon conclusion of training, pass 70%
